Students from Havant & South Downs College’s Politics and Economics classes welcomed a special guest on Friday 6 October when Southampton Test MP Dr Alan Whitehead visited the College.

Dr Whitehead covered many topics in his talk – as well as issues he hopes to tackle – before opening up to the audience of students, answering questions around Brexit, gender equality and life as an MP.

The Year One and Year Two students also took the chance to ask questions relating to the modules they are studying on their A Level courses.

Havant & South Downs College Head of Politics, Simon Foster, said: “A combination of AS and A2 Politics and Economics students from both South Down and Havant Campus attended the talk by Dr Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test (Labour).

“The visit was extremely beneficial. Amongst other things, Dr Whitehead covered the political work of an MP and the competing pressures on an MP, to the differences between a social democrat, a socialist and a Marxist, to the role of Brexit in market competition for economics students.

“It’s one thing to lecture on the subject, it’s quite another to hear from those at the front line of politics and Government such as a Shadow Minister from the House of Commons Opposition frontbench.”
