Overview

You will have lessons in theory, anatomy and physiology that will help develop your knowledge and understanding of all aspects of beauty. You’ll also study health and safety practice, client care and communication, and salon reception duties. For this course, the dress code is very important so youll need to be in full uniform at all times and bring your kit to all practical classes.

Three GCSE’s at grade 3 and a grade 4 for Science.

All students will be expected to comply with the beauty industry standards of dress code; this applies to both theory and practical lessons. Jewellery and facial piercings are not acceptable and must be removed before entering classes.

On this course, you will study:

  • Health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client care and communication in beauty related industries
  • Promotion of products and services to clients in a salon
  • Salon reception duties
  • How to provide facial skin care
  • How to remove hair using waxing techniques
  • How to provide manicure treatments
  • How to provide pedicure treatments
  • How to provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments
  • How to apply make-up
  • How to create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Subject-specific theory

The course involves a considerable amount of practical work. During workshop sessions you will watch demonstrations of skills, which you will then practice on each other before progressing to work on paying clients.

You will also receive separate lessons in theory and anatomy and physiology which will help to develop your knowledge and understanding of all aspects of beauty therapy.

Practical assessments will be performed on paying clients to ensure competence. Oral questioning will take place at the time of practical assessment. All practical assessments are graded as a Pass, Merit or Distinction. You will always need to be in full uniform and carry your kit to all practical classes. You are required to keep a record of achievement log book as evidence of treatments performed. Theoretical work including anatomy and physiology will be assessed using online testing or assignments.

This course requires you to purchase a uniform and kit and we include trips
to enhance your learning and experience of industry. All of these costs will be
explained at interview and students in receipt of financial assistance will be
supported with these costs.

If you achieve a Merit grade or higher on this course, you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy. Those students who do not wish to go onto the next level course can obtain employment within the beauty industry with the option of taking additional, more advanced training on a part time basis.

I would say it’s a college that really balances academia with fun, there is lots of extra-curricular stuff that you can get involved in. It has a really good work/life balance.

Laura Hagedorn, A Level student

The teaching has been really good, I’ve loved all of my teachers, they’ve all been really nice and supportive.

Jodie Hook

Everyone at the College was really helpful, and there’s lots of facilities, meaning it’s very easy to get your work done on time, and get good grades. The teaching and support was excellent, they were always on top of it, and made sure you got work done on time and you were challenged. Everyone is friendly and its really diverse, meaning you can get involved in lots of different things.
