Overview

You will cover cutting, perming, styling and colouring men’s and women’s hair. You will work on clients in a professional salon environment which will prepare you to work in the industry. You will complete work-related industry placements, which in the past has resulted in our previous students securing themselves employment in the industry.

Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including a Science subject and preferably the other three remaining to include Mathematics and English.

On this full time course at Alton College you will study the following units:

  • Working in the Hair Industry
  • Health and Safety
  • Client Consultation
  • Promote Products
  • Cutting Women’s hair
  • Colouring Hair
  • Perming Hair
  • Art of Dressing Hair
  • Cutting Men’s Hair
  • Cutting Men’s facial hair

You will be taught in a realistic salon environment by lecturers with a vast experience in the industry. Your practical lessons will be in a fully working salon which is open to the public. You will have the chance to enter into competition work such as L’Oréal and VTCT World Skills. You will have practical assessments for each unit to do in the salons and a theory exam for each practical unit.

You will be internally assessed for your practical units and externally assessed for theory exams.

You will be required to purchase a kit and uniform. Students who are in
receipt of financial assistance will have support for paying for these
items.

On successful completion of this course, you could go on to study Level 3 Hairdressing, Level 2 Barbering, Level 3 Theatrical Makeup, an Apprenticeship or employment.

This qualification may lead directly into employment in a salon as a junior hairdresser or to work as an independent hairdresser.
