If you are keen to gain lots of experience with children alongside your college work, this course provides the perfect combination for you. You will complete a large amount of work experience to enhance your learning, and in college, you will study how children develop and communicate.

By the end of the course, you will understand how to support children’s learning through play as well as the responsibilities of a caring professional.

A desire to work with children, a cleared DBS check and a grade 3 profile at GCSE.

You will study:

  • Child development from birth up to seven years, studying patterns of development and explore each area of development including physical, cognitive, language, emotional and social. You will use your new knowledge to support children to progress to the next stage of development.
  • Developing professional practice skills for work in early years settings, where you will learn about carrying out your role and responsibilities, having a positive work ethic and what skills and behaviours are needed. You will learn how to present yourself and build your organisation and communication skills.
  • Supporting children’s learning through play is one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of the role. Children’s play is critical for their learning. You will learn about the different types of play that are important for children at different ages and stages. You will also look at the importance of promoting play in all areas to improve development.

250 hours of professional practice required to pass the course.

Lessons in the classroom will include a mixture of formats including group work, individual activities, guest speakers, role plays, using case studies and some formal note-taking sessions.

You will be assessed through a mixture of coursework, placement assessments and professional skills. This course is a great step for anyone looking to progress onto a T Level. You may be able to complete English and Mathematics GCSEs alongside this course.
