Overview

Businesses are the heart of the economy. Business develops innovation, creates wealth within communities and is the leader in developing the skills of the UK workforce.

The OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3 qualification in Business uses a range of units to introduce a number of key business concepts, such as how businesses manage their resources; whether human, financial or operational. The importance of marketing will also be investigated, and there will be an opportunity for you to create your own promotional campaign for a product. You’ll experience business recruitment processes and create and interpret financial accounts. These courses are ideal training for the modern workplace.

You should normally have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including English and Mathematics. Merit or above in a Vocational Level 2 subject.

Our technical qualifications in Business develop your core skills and understanding of the requirements of the business sector. You will gain hands-on experience and have the opportunity to focus on specific topics such as human resources, marketing, accounting and business planning.

  • Marketing – how Marketing Managers decide on the pricing, packaging and promotion for their products, including what colours, sizes and features it should have.
  • Human Resources – how businesses recruit staff and how they keep them through a combination of rewards and training
  • Finance – why is Jones the Bootmaker losing money? How will Vodafone raise the money to build their 5G network?

Some of the 13 mandatory units include:

  • The Business Environment
  • Business Decisions
  • Accounting Concepts
  • Principles of Project Management
  • International Business.

You can then choose two optional units from:

  • Marketing Strategy
  • Marketing Campaign
  • Financial Accounting
  • Management Accounting
  • Resource Management
  • Business Operations

Lesson activities are wide-ranging; you will use case studies to explore how business have acted and role play to practice interview skills. You'll also use computer models to see what happens when you make decisions and have the opportunity to hear from speakers to help bring the topic to life.

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework (50%) and exams (50%). There are 15 different units over the two years, including 13 mandatory and two optional. Six of the mandatory units are examined.

These qualifications will provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress into Higher Education (HE) on a business-related programme such as Business, Business Management, Marketing, Business and Finance, Business and Economics and Accounting. It will also allow you to choose non-business-related degree programmes or take you into employment where you would continue to study.

My time at the college was definitely life changing, I have learnt a lot of new skills, and obviously it’s a completely new experience. The support was great, there was always people there to help and try make it as easy as they can for you. The college is really fantastic, it has helped me on the way to get to what I want to achieve within my career goals.

Erin Morgan, BTEC student

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.

Edward Smith, BTEC student

"I am delighted with my results and am really looking forward to studying Law at Oxford University. I really enjoyed my time at HSDC Alton and I really appreciate all the help and support from my fantastic teachers, without whom I wouldn't have got my place at Oxford."
