Do you like science? Would you like to be able to conduct practical activities similar to scientists who have created the COVID-19 vaccine? Or those that conduct the specialised testing for genetic disorders or those who determine which antibiotic is required to save someone‘s life? Are you interested in helping to come up with solutions to fix challenges such as climate change and global warming? If so, then this T Level in Medical & Laboratory Science could be the right course for you!

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including a grade 5 in English Language, Mathematics and Double Science (or Triple Science) or Level 2 in Science with a distinction, alongside GCSE grade 4 or above in English Language and Mathematics.

The course starts by introducing the core knowledge needed for work in the Science industry. This includes the following twelve elements:

Core Elements

  • Working Within the Health and Science Sector
  • Health and Safety and Environmental Regulations
  • Managing Information and Data Within the Health and Science Sector
  • Good Scientific and Clinical Practice

HSDC supports all learners to be successful through the use of a variety of learning activities. As much of the content is assessed through exams the knowledge is covered using a variety of methods. You will be required to purchase a laboratory coat and goggles at the start of your course as these will be essential items required when conducting practical activities.

In the first year of the course, you will be assessed on your knowledge of the core elements through two examinations.

Section A exam – This covers the content about working in the Science sector
Section B exam – This covers the Science content

Your skills will also be assessed through the employer-set project.

In the second year, the occupational specialist elements are assessed by assignments. These assignments will provide a grade that is Pass, Merit or Distinction.

This course allows you to achieve UCAS points allowing you to apply to study a range of science-based courses at university. It also provides you with the laboratory skills to go straight into work within the science industry or to move on to an Apprenticeship.

The college is a bright and happy place, everyone is kind and friendly to each other.

Megan Hall, A Level student

There are great teachers here. This college has felt more like a university than a school, and it’s definitely lived up to that more grown-up feel.

Vicky Lipscombe, A Level student

You take control of your own learning…the college were really helpful and always willing to do anything and go that extra step to help me get my grades.
