This fun cake decoration course is ideal for beginners or those with a little experience. You will have the opportunity to explore simple cake decorating techniques, gaining the knowledge needed to create your own cake design.

On this courses you will cover a range of skills and techniques including:

  • Cake decoration tools and their uses
  • Exploring and developing simple modelling and decoration technique
  • Making characters
  • Marzipan modelling
  • Effective use of colour
  • Creating hand moulded roses and leaves
  • How to create lettering from different cutters
  • Making royal icing and different piping techniques
  • Covering a cake to a quality finish
  • Designing and creating a decorated cake




This course is very hands-on. Teaching will consist of demonstrations, alongside practical and individual help from your lecturer. This is a non-qualification course, however you will gain a certificate upon completion.

Specific equipment needed for this course will be discussed in the first lesson, some equipment can be borrowed or shared for the duration of the course. You can bring basic tools that you already have such as piping nozzles (No 1.5, 2, 44), a non stick rolling pin, paint brushes, cutting wheel, pallette knife etc. You may also wish to bring a cake box or similar to safely transport your decorated cakes.

Materials you will need to provide during the course include royal icing, a cake or dummy, sugar paste, marzipan etc. Please note, you will also need an apron and sensible shoes suited to a kitchen environment.

There is no formal assessment on this course. However, you will be provided with feedback throughout the course.
