BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

Over the two years you will have the opportunity to study how children learn and develop as well as how we need to ensure their health and safety. You will study subjects such as the importance of play, language development and children’s nutrition. You will undertake 750 hours of professional development in three different settings. As part of this you will be expected to plan and deliver a variety of appropriate activities and demonstrate a variety of skills relating to the care of children.* At the end of the course you will have a licence to practise as a professional.

Students should normally have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 9-4. Alternatively, if you have studied at Level 2, you should have achieved a merit or above. Vocational courses are an ideal qualification for students who prefer coursework.

To study this course, you should have an interest in working with people.

Children’s development from 0 to 7years 11 months. You will look at physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional development. You will also look at how we meet their health and care needs as they develop.

  • Development of children’s communication, literacy and numeracy skills through their play and interaction with others.
  • How children play and learn, both indoors and outdoors.
  • How we observe the children so that we can then plan activities to meet the needs of individual children.
  • You will also have the opportunity to develop your practical skills as you will need to complete 750 hours in placements with children.

You will have a mixture of formal and less formal learning experiences. Some sessions will be in the form of lectures but you will also participate in a mixture of activities – whether working individually or in groups. You will participate in role plays, discussions and presentations. You will spend two days a week in a childcare setting throughout the course.

– One unit is assessed by means of an exam.
– Two units are assessed by controlled assignments
– Twelve units are assessed by coursework

CPLD is a professional qualification at level 3.

It is equivalent to 3 A levels

It allows you to go straight into the workplace

It carries UCAS points equal to 3 A* at A level, therefore allowing you to go to university
