Overview

If English is not your first language then ESOL classes could help you to become better at communicating in English in everyday life.

ESOL classes are available to anyone over the age of 16 who does not have English as a first language. They will help you to improve your Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening in English.

No prior qualifications are required.

You will be encouraged to undertake a range of tasks in a small classroom environment with support from the teacher in preparation for moving you through the level and preparing you for the exam at the end of the course.

Topics you may cover include:

  • Health
  • Travel and transport
  • Shopping and food
  • Education systems in the UK
  • Topics that relate to Citizenship

Following the initial assessment to identify your level, you will then work on your English skills at the appropriate level.

  • Use different styles of writing and punctuate correctly
  • Write in complete sentences and spell correctly using a variety of techniques
  • Use format and structure for different purposes
  • Present information appropriately
  • Use correct grammar and punctuation
  • Scan different texts to locate information
  • Obtain specific information from a text and decode words
  • Read and recognise sentence structures and recognise different purposes of texts
  • Follow a narrative, skim read and identify main points within a text
  • Recognise and understand organisational features
  • Support arguments with evidence and make relevant contributions in discussions.
  • Listen and respond appropriately to information
  • Read and recognise vocabulary relating to everyday topics

There are 3 exams at the end of each level. Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening.

Exams can be taken at various times throughout the course and your teacher will discuss with you the best time for you to sit the exam.

Following completion of ESOL Level 2 you can move onto a GCSE English Programme, Apprenticeship or other College programme.

My experience at the College was great, it’s very different to school, and I think it’s a good step to going to university. The support was amazing, I loved all of my teachers, they helped me through everything. The College is friendly and you will succeed.

Heidi Adamson Brattland, A Level student

I got into both of the universities I wanted to. It happens so fast and it’s an amazing feeling when you think that all of the work you’ve done has paid off in the best way possible.

Anton Sukhorukov, A Level student

This is a really good college, and it is definitely somewhere you can achieve your dreams.

Yolanda Stemp, BTEC student
