Overview

The Expressions Creative Programme is the course to do if you have an enthusiasm for the arts and are keen to extend yourself individually while working closely with the group as a whole. Active participation is essential to be successful on this course.

As well as experiencing lessons in Drama, Dance and Music, you will develop your independent life skills and abilities in English and Maths. You will also have a work experience placement which will help you to develop your employment skills and prepare you for a more independent life. You will work at a level suited to your own ability.

There will also be some theatre trips, visits and workshops throughout the year and we are delighted to have forged close links with Laine Theatre Arts, which includes working in partnership with their staff and students.

No formal qualifications or previous experience is required, but a good attitude to learning is important, as is a keen interest in the performing arts.

At HSDC Alton on the Expressions Course you will:

  • Study the Performing Arts through practical lessons looking at all aspects including Dance, Drama, Music and Art
  • Have the chance to develop your performance skills through live performance opportunities, working alongside other students at Alton
  • Take part in workshops with teachers & students from Laine Theatre Arts
  • Have the opportunity to develop your working skills through a work experience placement, preparing you for a more independent life
  • Develop your independent life skills and awareness of your local community

You will be taught by a small team of teachers and classes will be supported by Learning Support Assistants. You will complete assignments to build a portfolio of evidence to achieve the arts award qualification.  The assessments will consist of some written work but also require you to complete practical tasks.

As part of the course, you will be involved in various productions/performances demonstrating the skills you have developed during your time on the course.  This will mean that, on occasion, you will be required to work ‘unsociable’ hours due to evening performances or work experience in theatres.

You must generate a portfolio of evidence through different means.

You will be expected to provide your own stationery required for lessons. Any further costs are outlined below:

Advisable: Trips throughout the year from £50 each.

If the costs of equipment, materials and trips may cause you financial hardship, you may wish to read through details of our financial support scheme on our website.

Having successfully completed the course, you can progress onto other courses within the same department at HSDC. Our past students have also found this course a great gateway to different Further Education courses at a variety of other establishments.

Our past students have undertaken a variety of different work placements within different sectors linked to the Performing Arts.

You take control of your own learning…the college were really helpful and always willing to do anything and go that extra step to help me get my grades.

Scarlette Tiller, A Level student

The college is a bright and happy place, everyone is kind and friendly to each other.

Megan Hall, A Level student

I would say it’s a college that really balances academia with fun, there is lots of extra-curricular stuff that you can get involved in. It has a really good work/life balance.
