Overview

This course will provide you with the skills to enter the world of work. Our supported internship is a one-year course and is designed to build on students’ existing skills and interests. You will undertake a work placement with a relevant local employer for a minimum of 11 hours a week across the academic year (inclusive of usual academic holidays to give a real experience of work).

You will also receive regular ongoing job coach support which is tailored to each person and we match employment options to your skills. In addition to this, you will work on your English and Mathematics skills, review your progress and develop your employability skills.

No formal qualifications are required for this course however, a commitment and desire to work is essential, as is a recent record of work/voluntary experience.

  • Individual work placement
  • Employability
  • English
  • Maths
  • Tutorial
  • Group and 1:1 job coach sessions

As well as your ongoing work placement, we offer a variety of teaching and learning approaches including lectures, tutorials, workshops, visits, presentations and group discussions.

Your job coach will work with you, initially during your placement, to provide support in undertaking any duties required. They will also liaise with you and your employer for the duration to ensure progress is being made. Realistic but stretching targets will be set and reviewed throughout the placement.

You will be supported in all College classes via the use of Academic and Learning Support assistants where needed and the use of any learning aids or assistive technology as required.

Assessment will be through a process of observations, employer reviews and target setting based on consistent attendance at your workplace and at College.

Possible progression routes include, paid work (full or part time), traineeship, Apprenticeship, voluntary work and further training in work preparation skills.

Over the last three years, we have worked with over 30 local employers including Waitrose, Blue Reef Aquarium, B&M stores, Havant Borough Council, Greggs and many others.

We organise visits to local employers and invite employers to come in and speak to the interns or run mock interviews.

My time at the college was definitely life changing, I have learnt a lot of new skills, and obviously it’s a completely new experience. The support was great, there was always people there to help and try make it as easy as they can for you. The college is really fantastic, it has helped me on the way to get to what I want to achieve within my career goals.

Yolanda Stemp, BTEC student

College is definitely worth all the effort you put in, you get to meet lots of different people and it’s amazing.
