Introduction to Hairdressing

This is a part time course designed to introduce you to the hair and beauty sector, providing learners with the opportunity to develop basic techniques in shampooing, conditioning and styling women’s hair. To achieve the standards required you must maintain consistent attendance throughout the course.

You do not need any previous experience or qualifications to study this course.

On this course you will study:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Styling women’s hair

You will learn about career opportunities within the hair and beauty sector and the main hairdressing and beauty treatments. How to shampoo, condition and style women’s hair in a variety of ways, including blow drying, finger drying, setting and hair up styles. You will need to show that you understand the principles of hygiene and safety when performing any practical hairdressing skills.


This course will consist of theory input and practical skills performed in a realistic working salon. You will have the opportunity to work on each other or blocks in preparation to your assessments. Your assessments will be recorded in your portfolio on fee paying clients.


You will be assessed by an assessor observing your practical skills and by questioning your knowledge and understanding. You will produce a portfolio of work which will be completed throughout the course. This will contain client assessment sheets from your practical sessions, photographic evidence, a candidate assessment book and a log of services completed as proof of competence.
