Overview

This course offers key learning for anyone who interacts with children and young people, be it a childcare professional or parent/carer. By completing this course you will gain a great insight into safe and healthy environments for children, learn what signs and symptoms to look for if you suspect a child may be unwell and how to treat the most common childhood illnesses. Finally, the course will give a greater understanding of health emergencies and how you can support specific health conditions in an early years setting. 

To secure a place on this course you should hold passes in GCSE or Functional Skills Level 1 English or be willing to demonstrate this level.

On this 24 week course, you will cover three mandatory units as follows:

Unit 01 – Understand how to provide a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children

The aim of this unit is to explore ways to minimise cross-infection and maintain a safe and hygienic environment for babies and young children.

Unit 02 – Understand common childhood illnesses

The aim of this unit is to support you to recognise when a child is unwell and common childhood illnesses that may occur. You will also consider the policies and procedures relating to unwell children in an early years’ setting.

Unit 03 – Understand health emergencies and specific health conditions in an early years’ setting

The aim of this unit is to consider the role of the practitioner in relation to common accidents and basic first aid, as well as serious illness requiring emergency support. Acute and chronic health conditions including how to manage allergies in the setting will also be covered.

This is a distance learning course, where you will study and complete your learning using Google Classroom. There will be opportunities for you to attend a workshop in the dedicated Adult Learning Centre at the Havant Campus if support is required.

You will be required to complete three unit assignments, all with individual deadlines.

Upon completion of this course, you will be ready for the workplace and/or you will be able to progress onto another HSDC Adult Learning course.

The assessor for this course is a Registered Nurse, with many years of experience in the field, along with a strong understanding of the development needs of children and young people.
