Overview

The purpose of this qualification is to increase your knowledge and awareness of children and young people's mental health. By completing the qualification, you will develop knowledge of mental health problems commonly associated with children and young people, the impact of mental ill-health on children and young people and the support available to maintain mental wellbeing in children and young people. Ideal for those wishing to work in a school or college environment or any roles dealing with children and young people.

As all employers are now looking to recruit people who already hold a Level 2 Certificate in English and Mathematics (e.g. GCSE grade C/4 or above), a requirement for the course is that you have a minimum of Level 1 in English or be prepared to sit an English assessment to establish your current levels. Please discuss any queries regarding your Mathematics and English because all applications will be considered on an individual basis.

On this 12 week online course, you will study the following units:

  1. Understand children and young people's mental health
  2. Understand factors which may affect children and young people's mental health
  3. Understand children and young people's mental health concerns
  4. Understand the impact of children and young people's mental health concerns
  5. Understand how to support children and young people with mental health

You will be assessed on a portfolio of work that you will build as you progress through the units. There is no exam.

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to a Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health, Level 3 Award in the Awareness of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce (England) or Level 3 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.

Matthew Randell, A Level student

I’m really happy and pleased with my grades. I really loved my time at the college, I have also made lots of friends, it’s a really nice place to be, I don’t want to leave.

Lauren Piper, A Level student

My experience at the College was great, it’s very different to school, and I think it’s a good step to going to university. The support was amazing, I loved all of my teachers, they helped me through everything. The College is friendly and you will succeed.
