Overview

The qualification will help you to develop the knowledge and skills required for further study and can provide you with a qualification that you can use to gain entry onto a Level 3 Access Diploma programme.

You will study for GSCE or Functional Skills qualifications in English and Mathematics as part of the course, as these qualifications are very likely to be required for progression onto an Access Diploma, university course and/or for future employment.

This course will provide an opportunity for you to develop your study and learning skills in a supportive environment. You may have been out of education for some time or you may lack confidence in your academic skills, either way, the course could provide an excellent opportunity for you to step back into education. It may help you to gain a qualification that will improve your job prospects or may represent the first step on a learning journey that could lead to university and beyond.

Attendance is required for two full days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) from September through to the end of June at Leigh Park Adult Learning Centre. Course hours are designed to be compatible with school hours.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will need to sit brief numeracy and literacy assessments to determine whether GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications are the most appropriate for you to follow. As this is a Level 2 course, there is an expectation that you will need to hold a minimum of Level 1 English in order to enrol.

On this Pre-Access course, you will study the following:

  • Personal Study Skills
  • Personal Learning Skills
  • Critical Thinking
  • Improving Punctuation and Grammar Skills
  • Building a Personal Career portfolio
  • Communicating Information
  • Research Skills

Teaching and learning strategies will be varied to appeal to the learning needs and preferences of a wide range of students. Methods may include discussion, group tasks, pair activities, lectures, independent research tasks, reading and summarising and multimedia content supported by Google Classroom.

English & Mathematics GCSEs and the Pre-Access units will be taught at the Leigh Park Adult Learning Centre. Previous students have found the centre to be an ideal place to study as it is conveniently situated, caters only for adult learners, is smaller and quieter than our main campuses and is well equipped with IT facilities. Although lessons will take place at this venue, it is important to remember that you will have access to facilities and resources at all three of our campuses – Alton, Havant & South Downs, including the Learning Hub (library), Study Centre, Careers Advice Service, Print Services, Health & Wellbeing and Refectory.

You will be assessed through a portfolio of work which will include evidence of essays, reports, group work and presentations. There will be examinations for English & Mathematics. You will need to achieve 24 credits at Level 2 in order to achieve the qualification.

The qualification may be used to enhance employment opportunities or you may choose to go on to study on a Level 3 Access Diploma programme. Access Diplomas at HSDC include Nursing & Healthcare, Social Care, Teacher Education, Humanities and Health Sciences.

“I owe the staff a lot and I wouldn't be where I am today without them.”

Tom Andrews, A Level Student

My experience at the College was great, it’s very different to school, and I think it’s a good step to going to university. The support was amazing, I loved all of my teachers, they helped me through everything. The College is friendly and you will succeed.

Heidi Adamson Brattland, A Level student

The tutors were really supportive and it was all thanks to them that I have achieved what I have. I’ve also made loads of great friends and really enjoyed my time at the college.
