Overview

This HND programme in Business is linked to the University of Portsmouth, aimed at giving you the latest knowledge and skills for a changing business environment.

As a student you’ll work closely with highly qualified teachers who have both academic and industry-based backgrounds in business. You will study a number of units, as indicated in the course structure, that are each worth 15 credits. One of which is a substantial business-related research project, which will develop the skills and analytical tools you will need for a final year dissertation on an Honours Degree.

The HND in Business is a great option for those who want to study at Level 4 but don’t want to go to a traditional university. Class sizes are smaller (around 15) and you really get to know your lecturers (and they get to know you). The subjects covered on this course are the same as you would study at university. The big difference…you pay £6,165 per year! In addition to this, you are a University of Portsmouth student and will have access to the library, sports facilities and clubs that make Higher Education study so great. And finally, you can stay in halls if you wish.

Cost: £6,165 per year.

All candidates have to be aged over 18 years and with one of the following academic qualifications (please note, your qualifications do not have to be related to Business Studies):

– 48 UCAS points to include a minimum of one A Level at grade D or above or Edexcel, National Certificate qualification
– NVQ3 to Pass Level
– Access to Higher Education at Pass Level
– Level 3 National Certificate/Diploma
– Aged over 21 with relevant industrial/commercial experience

In addition, you should have English Language and Mathematics to a grade 4 at GCSE standard or Level 2 Functional Skills in both English and Mathematics.

The University of Portsmouth’s HND Business qualification has been designed and updated by the Business School and is in line with the QCF and relevant FHEQ benchmarks. All students achieve the award once they have accumulated 240 credits. This is normally achieved after two years of full time study.

On this course you will study:

Year One:

  • Marketing
  • Business Finance
  • Organisational Theory
  • Business Environment
  • Business Law
  • Purchasing
  • Human Resources Management
  • Applied Marketing

Year Two:

  • Business Strategy
  • Data Management
  • Research Project

In addition to the core units, you will study the following:

  • Working With and Leading People
  • Events Management
  • Human Resource Development
  • Small Business Enterprise
  • Business Psychology

Studying at Level 4 and 5 requires students to attend all lectures and commit themselves to additional hours allocated each week outside of college for research and writing reports. You will also develop team working skills over the course, in addition to individual learning requirements.

The University of Portsmouth Academic Skills Unit is available for support and advice to all HND Business students and should be used to help complement the learning undertaken at the College.

The course will be delivered in a variety of learning situations, lectures, one-to-one tuition, tutorials and workshops with a focus on independent learning development.

You will utilise the College’s latest learning resources, these will include access to online journals, contemporary business software and the latest business periodicals.

Developing practical business skills and the entrepreneurial mindset is at the core of our courses and the College’s enterprise society, Evolve, works closely with students to achieve this via mentoring, support and guidance.

Assessment is by a combination of final and continuous assessments which are set by the University of Portsmouth. These are work-based and are designed to build on the latest business theories.

This course provides the opportunity for direct entry on to the third and final year of the BA (Hons) Business and Management Degree at the University of Portsmouth (subject to achieving the required grade profile). Other popular progression routes are employment and degree Apprenticeships.

Our department has strong links with a number of local businesses.

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.

Matthew Randell, A Level student

I overcame a couple of barriers by working really hard to get the top grades. My experience was really good, with the course and the lecturers, the residentials and activities, together it was all really good. I had really great teaching support, I could always go to the lecturers and speak to them if I needed to.

David Stenning, Public Services student

My experience at the college has been really good, it’s been really rewarding, all the lecturers were so lovely and supportive there’s no way I could have done it without them - the teaching has been outstanding.

Lucie Brooks, A Level student
