Overview

The course is designed for anyone who is already working in the Fitness Industry but who have no relevant qualifications, those wishing to change careers or fitness enthusiasts who want to become Instructors.

Subject to interview.

On this course you will study:

  • How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
  • How to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating
  • How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme
  • The skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare a gym-based exercise programme with apparently healthy adults – both individuals and groups.

This may include young people in the 14-16 age range, provided they are part of a larger adult group. Client groups also covered are older adults, ante and postnatal clients and disabled clients provided the relevant contraindications and key safety guidelines are observed.

A mix of theory and practice, workshops, assignments and practical sessions will be used throughout the course.

Assessment will be via two multi-choice theory papers. Students will also have to plan, teach and evaluate a 1 hour fitness session, including teaching cardio-vascular machines, free and fixed resistance training, a warm up, cool down and pre and post stretching. Throughout the course, there will be ongoing practical assessment and there will also be some worksheet assignments.

This qualification is sufficient to provide entry into a career in the fitness industry or you can continue training to work as a Personal Trainer within health clubs, leisure centres or working with professional sports teams.

Personal Trainer Level 3,

My experience at the College was great, it’s very different to school, and I think it’s a good step to going to university. The support was amazing, I loved all of my teachers, they helped me through everything. The College is friendly and you will succeed.

Heidi Adamson Brattland, A Level student

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.

Edward Smith, BTEC student

"I am delighted with my results and am really looking forward to studying Law at Oxford University. I really enjoyed my time at HSDC Alton and I really appreciate all the help and support from my fantastic teachers, without whom I wouldn't have got my place at Oxford."

Catherine Goldie, HSDC Alton A Level Student
