Overview

The long track qualification will be for you if you need time to complete your GCSE Maths and English, alongside this Air Cabin Crew qualification.

If you would like to work as a member of air cabin crew or part of the airport ground crew team, this course will give you the knowledge and skills you need to succeed.

As a learner you’ll undertake training at the British Airways Training base at Heathrow Airport, completing a range of practical exercises including emergency evacuation procedures.

Daily lessons will take place in a replica of a Boeing 747 aircraft cabin. You’ll learn aviation operations, airline health, safety and security, emergency procedures, crew room duties and ground operations. In preparation for interviews with airlines, you’ll also participate in an airline mock interview day at one of our local partnership hotels.

You must be a minimum of 17 years of age to enrol on this course. You must have 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above to start this course.

On this course you will study:

  • An introduction to airline/aviation operations
  • Airline health, safety and security
  • Airline emergency procedures
  • Crew room duties
  • The role of air cabin crew (on board)
  • Preparation for employment as air cabin crew
  • The certificate in ground operations

Daily lessons will take place in a replica of a Boeing 747 aircraft cabin at Havant & South Downs College.

All of your lessons will be delivered by industry experts; our staff have previously worked for a range of airlines including British Airways, First Choice and Virgin Atlantic. Two members of the cabin crew teaching team are still working in the industry, one at Southampton Airport and the other works as crew for British Airways.

On the course you will experience a range of teaching methods including role-plays, videos and creating your own presentation, to name a few.

There is an opportunity to retake your English and Mathematics GCSEs if you need to whilst studying this course. If you have already completed your GCSEs, the fast track option will allow you to finish college by April, giving you the opportunity to fly in the same summer season.

Progress will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence, observations, examinations, role plays and case studies. Specialist components will be assessed off site during a residential to the British Airways training base at London Heathrow Airport. This will include safety and emergency training procedures in ditching, fire & smoke and slide deployment. This is compliant with all UK airlines, approved by Civil Aviation Authority standards. This trip is compulsory and will cost approximately £120.

This course requires you to purchase a uniform and kit and we include trips to enhance your learning and experience of industry. All of these costs will be explained at interview and students in receipt of financial assistance will be supported with these costs.

Successful students will be able to apply to work in the airline industry.

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Easy Jet, Southampton Airport, Gatwick Airport, Royal Air Force (Cabin crew within RAF).

I always knew what I wanted to do since leaving school but knew I would never be quite old enough to apply. It was then that I set out my plan to go to College and study Travel and Tourism for two years followed by the Cabin Crew course which would take me just over my 18th birthday. The Cabin Crew course really helped me a lot because terminology was used daily and all the basics I learned at College I applied into my actual airline job at British Airways. Without the course I don’t think I’d be where I am today. I’ve now been flying for five years and have worked my way up to be able to be in charge as the senior on board an aircraft. Working for BA has also given me so many opportunities such as being in the new TV advert ‘Made by Britain’ for the centenary year. You can achieve anything you want to as long as you put your mind to it. The Cabin Crew course at HSDC is an opportunity for you to take in all the basic information ready to apply it in future airline jobs.
