Would you like a career in a dynamic, growing industry that has many varied paths?

This course gives you a broad foundation in many facets of engineering and is a mixture of theory and practical, covering a whole range of units that give you the knowledge and skills that will be useful in an engineering career.

These include Computer Aided Design, electronics and machining. You will encounter a wide variety of learning opportunities using theoretical teaching and practical workshop sessions.

Your lessons will take place in the Sonardyne Centre for Engineering and Design Technology.

You should normally have achieved a grade 3 profile at GCSE. For GCSEs which remain with the old grading system, a grade 3 is equivalent to a grade D. To study this subject you should have an interest in technical subjects.

On this course you will study: Finding out about the engineering world, Gaining information about an engineeredproduct, Using various machines to manufactureparts, The department has the manufacturing resources that are the envy of all local schools and colleges, Learning about engines and othervehicle systems, Learning welding techniques, Learning about the basics of electronics inengineering, Gaining an understanding of mathematics and science in an engineering environment, Interpreting engineering information, in order to plan work.

Lessons will incorporate theoretical content, however there are a number of practical lessons within the course content.

The course will be assessed by written assignments, written exams and a project.

Upon successful completion of the Engineering course, work experience, project and achievement of grade 4 or above in English and Maths you would move on to an Engineering T level. Progression into apprenticeships is also possible.

My time at the college was definitely life changing, I have learnt a lot of new skills, and obviously it’s a completely new experience. The support was great, there was always people there to help and try make it as easy as they can for you. The college is really fantastic, it has helped me on the way to get to what I want to achieve within my career goals.

Erin Morgan, BTEC student

I would say it’s a college that really balances academia with fun, there is lots of extra-curricular stuff that you can get involved in. It has a really good work/life balance.

Laura Hagedorn, A Level student

I overcame a couple of barriers by working really hard to get the top grades. My experience was really good, with the course and the lecturers, the residentials and activities, together it was all really good. I had really great teaching support, I could always go to the lecturers and speak to them if I needed to.
