Overview

This is a one year full time course designed for 16-19 year olds who are interested in Beauty Therapy. This exciting and varied course allows you to learn a range of practical beauty therapy skills and the underpinning theory knowledge behind them.

There is a minimum entry requirement of three GCSEs at grade 4 and above, including English Language and Science and GCSE Mathematics at grade 3 or above.

All students will be expected to comply with the beauty industry standards of dress code; this applies to both theory and practical lessons. Jewellery and facial piercings are not acceptable and must be removed before entering classes.

Throughout the course you will cover the following topics:

  • Principles of practice for beauty therapists
  • Health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client care and communication
  • Promoting products and services to clients in a salon
  • Facial and skin analysis treatments
  • Hair removal treatments
  • Manicure services
  • Pedicure services
  • Light cured gel polish
  • Lash and eyebrow treatments including lash lift
  • Apply make-up
  • Spray tanning treatments
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Subject-specific theory

The course involves a considerable amount of practical work, alongside employer involvement. There will be masterclasses set up by employers throughout the learning programme. During workshop sessions you will watch demonstrations of skills, which you will then practice on each other before progressing to work on paying clients. You will also receive separate lessons in theory, anatomy and physiology which will help to develop your knowledge and understanding of all aspects of Beauty Therapy.

Practical assessments are externally set by the awarding organisation and internally marked. Candidates will be able to identify and use effective skills, knowledge and understanding from across the unit’s content area and will be judged against the unit grading criteria. You will always need to be in full uniform and carry your kit to all practical classes. You are required to keep a record of achievement log book as evidence of treatments performed. Exams will be externally set and marked. You are also required to do two weeks of work experience.

This course requires you to purchase a uniform and kit and we include trips to enhance your learning and experience of industry. All of these costs will be explained at interview and students in receipt of financial assistance will be supported with these costs.

Once the course is completed you can apply to progress onto the Level 3 in Beauty Therapy. Those students who do not wish to go onto the next level course can obtain employment within the beauty industry.

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.

Edward Smith, BTEC student

College is definitely worth all the effort you put in, you get to meet lots of different people and it’s amazing.

Ebony Puttock, A Level student
