This course is ideal for those who wish to obtain a qualification in Engineering. Usually, applicants are currently working in, or have experience in the Engineering sector. You should be able to attend college on a day release basis for over two years. Consideration will be given to you if you wish to progress into Engineering from an industrial background.
The course includes the use of modern industry-standard software, equipment, use of analysis tools, CAD, CNC, and PLC programming. The use of 3D modelling links with the Design and Project units. A Fundamental Study of Mechanical & Electrical and Electronic principles links with the Maths unit to promote a more applied approach to the subject.
Ideally, you should have four GCSE passes at a minimum of grade 4/C in Mathematics, English, Science, and other appropriate subject or satisfactory completion of a BTEC Level 2 qualification to Merit standard or above.
If you do not possess the above qualifications but have substantial appropriate industrial experience or equivalent experience, your application will also be considered. The College offers several Mathematics and English courses at various levels for potential Access students.
The course is delivered over two years on a part-time day release basis for 34 weeks per year.
Six units are studied in Year 1, and five in Year 2 (one of which is a double unit). The qualification is awarded on successful competition of all core units plus the correct number of optional units such as those shown below:
All units are taught within our specialist teaching rooms. Each unit is delivered by our experienced lecturers using a variety of teaching methods. Classes are informal and incorporate a variety of teaching and learning methods e.g. discussion, lectures, group work, and practical sessions. Attendance is compulsory.
The exciting use of industry-standard technology is embedded throughout the course equipping you with skills that are recognised within the engineering sector. You are also given help and advice on applying for Higher Education.
Units are individually assessed through the completion of assignment-based activities, essays, coursework, independent study, research, practical work, and class-based tests. The qualification grade is an aggregation of your unit-level performance and is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction overall.
If you achieve the Diploma qualification, you could progress to technician roles where further on-the-job training may be required. Alternatively, you could progress to Higher Education to continue your course of study, for example, the Pearson HND Level 5 Diploma in Engineering.
The College works closely with local companies in many Engineering sectors to design courses to suit their individual needs. The College is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice.
