The Early Years Lead Practitioner Apprenticeship equips individuals with the advanced knowledge and leadership skills required to support the care, learning, and development of children from birth to eight years across a wide range of educational settings. These include day nurseries, pre-schools, nursery schools, primary schools, hospitals, social care environments, out-of-school provision, and local authority settings. The apprenticeship prepares practitioners to lead high-quality early years practice while promoting inclusive, child-centred learning experiences that support every child’s individual development.
Our expectation is that all Apprentices should already possess English and Mathematics to a GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent. However, we will consider applicants without these grades subject to an initial assessment with one of the Apprenticeship Team. A Level 3 qualification in a similar sector or significant experience is also required for this qualification.
Throughout the apprenticeship, individuals develop the expertise to lead the day-to-day delivery of early years provision, acting as positive role models who inspire and support colleagues to enhance their own practice. They build a strong understanding of child development, play-based learning, curriculum planning, assessment, and inclusive approaches, enabling them to create engaging environments that meet the diverse needs of young children. Apprentices also gain the confidence to take responsibility for specific areas of provision, such as communication and language, physical development, planning and assessment, or outdoor learning, helping to drive continuous improvement within their setting. Working collaboratively with children, families, colleagues, and other professionals, apprentices develop the leadership, communication, and organisational skills needed to maintain high standards of education and care. They learn to contribute to the ongoing development of their setting by implementing best practice, supporting the professional development of others, and responding to developments across the early years sector. Through the programme, apprentices become confident practitioners who are able to lead operational practice while making a positive and lasting impact on children’s learning, wellbeing, and future development. 24 months duration with a typical three month assessment period, no college release day required. Apprentices are taught via a mix of classroom delivery, work-based learning/assessment and vocational “on and off the job training”.
Knowledge test, portfolio based interview and project/improvement presentation.
On completion, apprentices can go into industry or pursue other specialist qualifications.
Opportunities may exist to gain professional accreditation in your chosen field post completion of the qualification. Your Assessor will support you with information on gaining professional accreditation. As we work with Apprentices that are already employed, if you attend our day release programmes you will mix with a diverse range of businesses with Apprentices in the same sector.
