Overview

The course includes use of modern industry standard software, equipment, use of analysis tools, CAD and CNC programming. The use of 3D modelling links with the Design and Project units along with the study of engineering materials. A Fundamental study Mechanical & Electrical and Electronic principles links with the Maths unit to promote a more applied approach to the subject.

This course is ideal for students who wish to obtain a qualification in Mechanical Engineering. Usually applicants are currently working in, or have experience of an Engineering sector. Students should be able to attend College on a day release basis over two years. Consideration will be given to students wishing to progress into Engineering from an industrial background.

The course is delivered over two years on a part time day release basis for a duration of 34 weeks per year. Six units are studied in the first year, and five in the second year (one of which is a double unit).

  • Mathematics for Engineering Technicians

  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Computer Aided Drafting
  • Engineering Materials
  • Engineering Design
  • Secondary & Finishing Techniques
  • CNC

All units are taught within our specialist teaching rooms. Each unit is delivered by our experienced lecturers using a variety of teaching methods. Classes are informal and incorporate a variety of teaching and learning methods e.g. discussion, lectures, group work and practical sessions. Attendance is compulsory.

The exciting use industry standard technology is embedded throughout the course equipping you with skills that are recognised within the engineering sector. Students are also given help and advice on applying for Higher Education.

Assessment is made through completion of assignment based activities, essays, course work, independent study and research, practical work and class based tests. In order to achieve an overall pass, students must achieve 60 credits of which at least 45 must be at Level 3 and up to 15 at Level 2. All Level 3 credits will be graded at Pass/Merit or Distinction.

Satisfactory completion of the course can offer progression to a Higher National Certificate or an appropriate higher education programme. This qualification is recognised by employers based within Engineering.
