Overview

A Funeral Team Member is the first point of contact for the business. Building good client relationships and confidence in the business is paramount. They must create a good first impression putting clients at ease, taking information, answering questions, or finding answers. Funeral Team Members make a positive difference to their clients at a challenging and emotional time. Contact with the deceased is a key aspect of any role within this industry. Working with people, feeling passionate about supporting and assisting clients is a rewarding and worthwhile job that provides excellent career opportunities. Funeral team members will specialise in one of two roles: A Funeral Arranger – supports the funeral director by arranging funerals and pre-payment plans, handling customer enquiries, sales, and aftercare either on or off-site. Administration and payment reconciliation is a part of this job role. A Funeral Operative – plays an active role in assisting the funeral director on funerals, cleaning and driving a variety of vehicles, bringing the deceased into care, preparing the deceased and coffins, and supporting client visits. Operatives will participate in an out-of-hours service.

Our expectation is that all Apprentices should already possess English and Mathematics GCSE grade D/E, 2/3 or equivalent. However, we will consider applicants without these grades subject to an initial assessment with one of the Apprenticeship Team.

This is a fully work-based Apprenticeship. Full delivery of the Apprenticeship takes place with your Apprenticeship Assessor visiting you and your Mentor in your place of work on a monthly basis. Typical Course Duration: 12 months.

Apprentices can be upskilled by work-based learning/assessment and vocational “on and off the job training”. This is always dependent on the course, the preferences of the business, and the wishes of the learner.

Apprentices will be assessed to the Apprenticeship standard using three methods of assessment: 1. Knowledge test 2. Competence scenario 3. Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence The assessments are synoptic and take a view of the overall performance of the Apprentice in their specific job role. The assessment activities can be completed in any order within the 3-month end-point assessment period. All assessment methods are equally weighted in their contribution to the overall grade.

If you work for a large organisation, you could be promoted to Funeral Director. With experience and training, you could become a tutor and teach others how to become a Funeral Team Member.

I overcame a couple of barriers by working really hard to get the top grades. My experience was really good, with the course and the lecturers, the residentials and activities, together it was all really good. I had really great teaching support, I could always go to the lecturers and speak to them if I needed to.

David Stenning, Public Services student

The teaching and support was really great, the quality was really great, all the teachers really care about your education as well as your wellbeing, they take everything into consideration and they’re great.

Katie Whittingham, A Level student

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.
