Upon completion of this course learners will also be able to further their knowledge and skills by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:

  • Theatrical and media make-up
  • Hairdressing

Five GCSEs at grade 3 including English
Language and Mathematics.

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units, which include:

  • Health, safety and hygiene
  • Make-up applications
  • Hair preparation services
  • Continuity planning for make-up services
  • Dress and finish hair services
  • Continuity hair services
  • Anatomy and physiology for make-up artists
  • Total look for competition work
  • Face and body art painting
  • Fashion and editorial make-up

Throughout this qualification, learners will have three practical make-up skills workshops and one practical hair workshop. In order to gain underpinning knowledge there are also two hours of theory, one hour of tutorial and one hour of portfolio building, where you will be able to set yourselves targets and keep on track with the course.

Learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan for and provide make-up applications, hair preparation services, fashion and editorial make-up and face and body painting.

Learners will develop their abilities to ensure that continuity services are adhered to for make-up application as well as hair services, which in turn will ensure they meet the strict criteria needed to produce a total look for competition work. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving, team-working and research skills will also be developed.

You will be required to take two exams, these are externally set and externally marked examinations. Throughout the course you will undergo externally set practical assessments. Then as a final achievement to gain your qualification you will undergo a practical synoptic. This is externally set and internally marked and counts towards your final grade.

This course requires you to purchase a uniform and kit and we include trips to enhance your learning and experience of industry. All of these costs will be explained at interview and students in receipt of financial assistance will be supported with these costs.

You can progress onto the Theatrical & Media Hair and Make-Up Artistry VTCT Level 3 Diploma. In addition, you could gain employment in the field of theatre/media make-up.

There are great teachers here. This college has felt more like a university than a school, and it’s definitely lived up to that more grown-up feel.

Vicky Lipscombe, A Level student

I got into both of the universities I wanted to. It happens so fast and it’s an amazing feeling when you think that all of the work you’ve done has paid off in the best way possible.

Anton Sukhorukov, A Level student

You take control of your own learning…the college were really helpful and always willing to do anything and go that extra step to help me get my grades.
