Be Employable

There are many extracurricular activities you can take part in to support your employability after college. From becoming a student ambassador to attending employment fairs, take a look below.

HSDC is dedicated to ensuring that all students progress with the tools that will enable them to thrive after completion of their course. Whilst studying with us you will also gain valuable and sought after employability skills through various activities and tutorial sessions developed by the careers team. HSDC offers targeted Skills Weeks that enable you to develop your individual skill set that will benefit you in the future.

School leaver programmes and internships are year 13 students with A Levels or equivalent qualifications who have decided instead to enter the world of work. Generally, companies are looking for 240+ UCAS points. There are now School Leaver programmes in all business sectors – from technical to creative. They are generally with FTSE 100 leading employers who offer great training programmes and pay good starting salaries. HSDC’s careers team are able to help you identify opportunities that would be right for you after completion of your course and into your choice of career.

The College has extensive links with local and national employers across a range of industries. The partnerships that HSDC have developed benefit you directly, in that our Employers open their doors to HSDC students, allowing them to visit, get an insight into different industries, have talks from employers about what they are looking for in their business and introduce students to different recruitment processes. This all helps our students to be prepared for their future progression into the workplace.

Alton Campus

Every year we hold a Progression Fair at Alton campus where you’ll have the chance to talk to universities and attend workshops on personal statements and finance. We also encourage you to attend a national Higher Education event, held in Guildford Surrey, which is attended by every university and gives you the chance to see all possibilities open to you.

Havant and South Downs Campuses

Held annually at the end of September for Havant and South Downs campuses, this event is designed for First and Second Year students. There are representatives from at least 60 universities, gap year companies, representatives from company training schemes, apprenticeship providers and employers. A chance to network, find out about different progression opportunities to help you decide what your next steps will be.

The NCS is open to any students aged 16 or 17, and our Level 3 Public Services students at South Downs Campus get the opportunity to complete it as part of their course. It involves a residential trip, group activities and a community project.

As an extra-curricular activity, you have the opportunity to become a Student Ambassador or a Social Media Ambassador. Becoming an HSDC ambassador will not only boost your employability but will also give you the chance to make new friends and develop your skills and knowledge. Find out more about the roles on our Student Ambassador page.

HSDC offers numerous volunteering opportunities within the local community and further afield. Aside from the obvious benefit of the ‘feel-good’ factor that comes with giving your time to a worthy cause, volunteering can also help give you the competitive edge: you can gain real work experience in an industry that interests you, gain valuable skills and experience that sets you apart from other people in your age group, and improve your CV and chances at interview. HSDC can help you arrange a volunteering placement that benefits you.
