Celebrating Partnerships #LoveOurColleges

May 15, 2019

""

Colleges across England educate and train 2.2 million people every year. A recent survey showed that 6 in 10 SMEs say that finding employees with the right skills is their biggest concern – with 58% believing that the UK will get left behind if government doesn’t address the issue. These businesses said that colleges are best placed to skill the future workforce that they need.

Havant & South Downs College (HSDC) has a number of strong partnerships with both local and national organisations. These partnerships help ensure that we are not only delivering academic excellence, but are also preparing our students for their future. Our work with businesses helps us identify the skills gaps in the local area, and develop our provision to meet the needs of the local labour market. As part of Love Our Colleges we’re highlighting some of the partnerships we have, and how they strengthen the service we provide to our students and local community:

Havant Business Partnership

HSDC has been working closely with Havant Borough Council, hosting more than 25 local businesses as the first Havant Business partnership event this March. The vision of this partnership is to support the development of high growth local businesses, providing the training and upskilling of the workforce to support businesses and the local economy.

Engineering Project Day

Engineering graduates make up approximately 25% of this country’s production workforce. This annual event held by HSDC both showcases the work of current apprentices to their current employers, and gives businesses a chance to view the projects created by our full-time students, with the view to finding and recruiting their future workforce.

Charity lunch with the Royal Navy

‘Giving back’ was the key message behind a charity lunch cooked by students from Havant & South Downs College (HSDC) and Royal Navy chefs on the 28 March. Chefs and stewards from the Royal Navy visited the HSDC restaurant to cook for members of the public and raise money for local charity, Rowans Hospice.

University of Portsmouth Assessment Day

HSDC has strong educational relationships, working with leading organisations and educational establishments. These partnerships include the University of Portsmouth and the Southern Universities Network (SUN), this Spring the two came together giving students the opportunity to attend a full assessment day held at the University of Portsmouth.

Medical Mavericks Event with Chichester University

Around 80 Health & Social Care students had a taste of a variety of healthcare careers at a Medical Mavericks event earlier this year. The event, supported by the Southern Universities Network (SUN) and Chichester University provided hands-on workshops to inspire students to make more informed decisions about their career and lifestyle choices as well as opening their eyes to different healthcare careers.

Havant & South Downs College is proud to be supporting Love our Colleges. Colleges across the country help people of all ages and backgrounds to make the most of their talents and ambitions. Rooted in local communities, they are crucial in driving social mobility and providing the skills to boost local and regional economies.
