Overview

This course will provide you with the skills to enter the world of work. Our supported internship is a one-year course and is designed to build on students’ existing skills and interests. You will undertake a work placement with a relevant local employer for a minimum of 12 hours a week across the academic year (inclusive of usual academic holidays to give a real experience of work). You will also receive regular ongoing job coach support which is tailored to each person and we match employment options to your skills. In addition to this, you will work on your English and Mathematics skills, review your progress and develop your employability skills.

No formal qualifications are required for this course however, a commitment and desire to work is essential, as is a recent record of work/ voluntary experience.

  • Individual work placement
  • Employability skills
  • English
  • Maths
  • Tutorial
  • Group and 1:1 job coach sessions

As well as your ongoing work placement, we offer a variety of teaching and learning approaches including lectures, tutorials, workshops, visits, presentations and group discussions.

Your job coach will work with you, initially during your placement, to provide support in undertaking any duties required. They will also liaise with you and your employer for the duration to ensure progress is being made. Realistic but stretching targets will be set and reviewed throughout the placement.

You will be supported in all College classes via the use of Academic and Learning Support Assistants where needed and the use of any learning aids or assistive technology as required.

Assessment will be through a process of observations, employer reviews and target setting based on consistent attendance at your workplace and at College.

Possible progression routes include paid work (full or part time), traineeship, Apprenticeship, voluntary work and further training in work preparation skills.

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.

Matthew Randell, A Level student

Everyone at the College was really helpful, and there’s lots of facilities, meaning it’s very easy to get your work done on time, and get good grades. The teaching and support was excellent, they were always on top of it, and made sure you got work done on time and you were challenged. Everyone is friendly and its really diverse, meaning you can get involved in lots of different things.

Conor Ward, BTEC student

“HSDC provided me with the opportunity for autonomous study and the choice of subjects that I wanted to study, which helped me develop relevant knowledge as well as relevant skills for the workplace.”

Lucas Ratcliffe, A Level and CTEC student
