Overview

The AI and Automation Practitioner Apprenticeship prepares individuals to support organisations across a wide range of sectors that rely on digital tools, online systems, and data-driven processes to operate efficiently. Apprentices develop the knowledge and skills to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and drive continuous improvement through the safe, responsible, and effective use of automation, integration, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Working within operational teams, digital support functions, or change delivery roles, apprentices identify opportunities to improve existing systems and processes by implementing digital solutions that reduce manual effort, eliminate duplicated tasks, and improve workflow efficiency. They analyse business challenges, recommend and develop low-code or no-code automation solutions, including AI-enabled technologies, and help organisations realise time and cost savings while improving accuracy and productivity.

Our expectation is that all Apprentices should already possess English and Mathematics to a GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent. However, we will consider applicants without these grades subject to an initial assessment with one of the Apprenticeship Team. A Level 3 qualification in a similar sector or significant experience is also required for this qualification.

Throughout the apprenticeship, individuals work collaboratively with colleagues across departments such as operations, customer support, finance, and service delivery, as well as external technology providers where required. They develop strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills to ensure digital solutions align with organisational objectives and user needs. A key aspect of the role is supporting the responsible, safe, and ethical adoption of AI, automation, and digital technologies, ensuring solutions comply with organisational policies while delivering measurable business benefits. 18 months with a typical three month assessment period, no college release day required. Great progression from Data Technician or IT Solution Technician. Digital route.

Apprentices are taught via a mix of classroom delivery, work-based learning/assessment and vocational “on and off the job training”.

Knowledge test, portfolio based interview and project/improvement presentation.

On completion, you can progress in industry or onto a degree Apprenticeship.

Opportunities may exist to gain professional accreditation in your chosen field post completion of the qualification. Your Assessor will support you with information on gaining professional accreditation. As we work with Apprentices that are already employed, if you attend our day release programmes you will mix with a diverse range of businesses with Apprentices in the same sector.

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.

Edward Smith, BTEC student

"I am delighted with my results and am really looking forward to studying Law at Oxford University. I really enjoyed my time at HSDC Alton and I really appreciate all the help and support from my fantastic teachers, without whom I wouldn't have got my place at Oxford."

Catherine Goldie, HSDC Alton A Level Student

I’m really happy and pleased with my grades. I really loved my time at the college, I have also made lots of friends, it’s a really nice place to be, I don’t want to leave.
