Overview

Fluency in Spanish opens up educational, employment and travel opportunities, especially in Europe, Latin America and the US where Spanish is the most widely spoken language after English. Studying Spanish at A Level will give you the knowledge and the skills to be able to express your opinions spontaneously in both speaking and writing regarding Spanish-speaking society, from popular culture to how technology is shaping our lives. If you dream of speaking and writing a foreign language accurately and confidently and perhaps even working abroad, this course will help meet this ambition.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above. A grade 6 in GCSE Spanish is required.

Structure

You will study:

Aspects of Hispanic society and artistic culture in the Hispanic world. In this section, we study a wide range of topics such as different celebrations, food, traditions, painting and architecture, celebrities, law and history of the Spanish speaking world
Multiculturalism in Hispanic society and aspects of political life in Hispanic society. You will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss current affairs affecting Spanish speaking countries such as immigration, racism, integration and young people as well as monarchies, republics and dictatorships and social movements in Spain and Latin America
One Spanish film and one pla
Individual research project – this is where you get to choose. You will research a topic of your choice related to the Hispanic world. You will be given total freedom to research with guidance from your teacher
Grammar
In addition, in Year 1 you will practice your spoken Spanish in class with your peers in small groups and also with your Spanish tutor (a native speaker of the language) on a one-toone basis at the end of each textbook chapter in order to gain fluency and confidence. In Year 2 you will have increased one-to-one speaking practice with your tutor in the months leading up to the examination.

Teaching & Learning

Class activities are wide-ranging, from debates to pair work for discussions, working at your own pace using audio, video, text and internet-based resources in the multimedia language laboratory and via Google Classroom. We also use Virtual Reality (VR) technology to bring the topics closer to you.

Assessment

100% exam (three examination papers).

Paper one: Listening, Reading and Writing (Translation)
Paper two: Writing (two essays: one on a play and one on a film from a set list)
Paper three: Speaking (discussion of a stimulus card plus individual research project)
