Overview

This qualification is a two-year, full time study programme; it is an in-depth study of the health and social care sector. It supports progression to health and social care related degrees, work or a higher apprenticeship.

You will have the opportunity to complete 100 hours of placement over the 2 years which will be related to your chosen career pathway. The course is equivalent to three A Levels.

You will develop professional and personal skills through interaction with people both in the workplace and through simulation and assessment of practical skills. The course allows you to build person-centred care skills and positive relationships with the people you are working with.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Mathematics or English Language.

In the first year, you will cover subjects such as:

• Human Lifespan Development

• Working in the Health Care Sector

• Anatomy and Physiology

• Nutritional Health

• Meeting Individual Care Needs

You will explore the needs of service users and the role that you will play in supporting their needs as a professional. In the second year, you will continue exploring the requirements of an individual with complex needs, in a variety of settings.

Units such as:

• Mental Health and Wellbeing

• Supporting Those With Individual Needs Psychological and Sociological Perspectives

These are just a sample of the units you will study. You will also complete 100 hours of placement during the two year programme.

You will be assessed through assignment work with four exams. Two in the first year and two in the second year.

Upon successful completion and achievement of this qualification you can choose a pathway that focuses on a particular occupational area of employment such as domiciliary care; care support worker; care home advocate and more. Alternatively, you can choose to either progress on to a national Apprenticeship in health and social care or a degree in the health and social care sector.

There are lots of people at the college, each studying a diverse range of courses, people from all different areas come to study here, it creates a sense of community, there is a huge social aspect to college life across all courses.

Lee Backhouse, BTEC student

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.

Matthew Randell, A Level student

“I owe the staff a lot and I wouldn't be where I am today without them.”

Tom Andrews, A Level Student
