Overview

This course will introduce you to the worlds of the Ancient Greeks and Romans through epic literature, ancient sources in translation and the art and architecture they produced.You will explore the exciting worlds of religion and philosophy and their impact on society, as well as the ways in which public opinion was manipulated. If you are interested in the ancient world and enjoy reading and discussion then you will love studying Classical Civilisation.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and Mathematics.

You will study three units:The World of the Hero – Epics by Homer and Virgil on the subject of the Trojan War. In the First Year you will study the Iliad alongside the social, religious and cultural context in which it was written. In the Second Year you will study the Aeneid and explore the ways in which the heroic world was viewed by the Romans.Imperial Image – The first Roman emperor, Augustus Caesar was, through careful management of public opinion, able to convince a society that was fundamentally antimonarchical to turn away from its republican values and to accept one-man rule. Study texts and visual culture to find out how.Greek Religion – Study Greek belief systems, and the impact religion had on society, politics and the development of philosophy. You will learn about all aspects of Greek Religion and the way that it worked in society, including the nature of Gods and how their personalities were defined, mystery cults and oracles.

You will enjoy a variety of lessons, learning how to analyse ancient text alongside exploring the culture, architecture and art of Greece and Rome in their historical contexts; There is a strong element of mythology because religion was a central part of ancient life and you will discover the impact it had on art, philosophy and the way that people thought.Engage in lively debates about the beliefs and morals of the ancient world whilst gaining a well-regarded A Level You will study ancient texts in translation and analyse art and buildings to see what they tell us about the past.A yearly residential to either Greece or Rome and the Bay of Naples is offered, giving the chance to see some of the places you will for yourself. There are also opportunities to visit museums and historic sites.

Examination at the end of year two.

Classical Civilisation requires a variety of skills and is, therefore, very highly regarded by university admission tutors. The majority of our students go on to study at degree level in a wide variety of subject areas.


Everyone at the College was really helpful, and there’s lots of facilities, meaning it’s very easy to get your work done on time, and get good grades. The teaching and support was excellent, they were always on top of it, and made sure you got work done on time and you were challenged.
