Overview

This is a highly regarded qualification that gives students considerable advantages in a wide range of careers and further study.

Becoming proficient in Mathematics helps you to develop clear, logical thinking and excellent problem solving skills. It fits well with subjects such as psychology, geography and economics. A Level Mathematics is highly recommended for students studying computer science, chemistry and physics.

You will study many aspects of pure Mathematics, mechanics and statistics. The course is a considerable step up from GCSE and so is suitable for those who enjoy mathematics and have strong algebraic skills.

The Mathematics department has also been running a popular and successful student mentoring scheme where second-year students meet weekly with first-year students to support them.

Every student is encouraged to enter the UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge, and the most successful are supported in the Senior Team Challenge and the British Mathematics Olympiad.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including a grade 6 in Mathematics.

On this course, you will study:

Pure Mathematics (two thirds of the course)

  • Algebra
  • Proof
  • Geometry
  • Sequences and series
  • Trigonometry
  • Calculus
  • Vectors

Statistics (one sixth of the course)

  • Data representation
  • Probability distributions
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Sampling

Mechanics (one sixth of the course)

  • Forces
  • Kinematics
  • Dynamics
  • Newton’s Laws of Motion
  • Momentum

Mathematics at this level involves solving complex and unfamiliar problems. Through a variety of classroom-based activities and bespoke interactive resources we will equip you with the skills to tackle these problems. This will be supplemented with regular independent learning tasks to enhance your progress.

Student support is given as a priority throughout the year. In previous years we have run weekly drop-in workshops as well as targeted booster sessions. For exam preparation, we have run extra revision lessons as well as providing access to past exam papers.

The maths department has also been running a popular and successful student mentoring scheme where second year maths students meet weekly with first year students to support them.

Every maths student is encouraged to enter the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge, and the most successful are supported in the Senior Team Challenge and the British Maths Olympiad.

All content is assessed at the end of the second year in three exams, which are each two hours long.

The majority of students go on to Higher Education, studying a range of subjects including Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematical Biology, Computer Science, Economics, Finance and Actuarial Science.

My time at the college was definitely life changing, I have learnt a lot of new skills, and obviously it’s a completely new experience. The support was great, there was always people there to help and try make it as easy as they can for you. The college is really fantastic, it has helped me on the way to get to what I want to achieve within my career goals.
