Overview

This A Level equivalent course follows an applied learning structure, meaning it focuses on real-world applications of scientific concepts. It offers a context led approach to scientific study, and is excellent preparation for many careers in healthcare, such as radiography, nursing and paramedic science.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language, Mathematics and Science. GCSE Biology is preferred if taken.

In Year 1 you will study:

  • Human health and disease
  • Physiological measurement techniques
  • Medical science research methods

In Year 2 you will study:

  • Medicines and treatment of disease
  • Clinical laboratory techniques
  • Medical case study

Teachers will employ a variety of methods to deliver the course content. Here are some possibilities:

  • Lectures and Class Discussions: These cover the fundamentals of human biology and related medical topics.
  • Practical Activities: Students might conduct experiments, dissections, physiological tests, or practice laboratory techniques to reinforce theoretical concepts.
  • Case Studies: Analysing real-world medical scenarios allows students to apply their knowledge to solve problems.
  • Research Projects: Students can delve deeper into specific topics through independent or collaborative research.

Assessments will comprise 50% externally set practical exams and 50% internally assessed work.

The WJEC Medical Science Diploma is designed as a stepping stone towards careers in healthcare, through progression onto HE courses or Healthcare Apprenticeships.
