It offers a context led approach to scientific study, and is excellent preparation for many careers in healthcare, such as radiography, nursing and paramedic science.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language, Mathematics and Science. GCSE Biology is preferred if taken.

  • Human health and disease
  • Physiological measurement techniques
  • Medical science research methods

In Year 2 you will study:

  • Medicines and treatment of disease
  • Clinical laboratory techniques
  • Medical case study

Teachers will employ a variety of methods to deliver the course content. Here are some possibilities:

  • Lectures and Class Discussions: These cover the fundamentals of human biology and related medical topics.
  • Practical Activities: Students might conduct experiments, dissections, physiological tests, or practice laboratory techniques to reinforce theoretical concepts.
  • Case Studies: Analysing real-world medical scenarios allows students to apply their knowledge to solve problems.
  • Research Projects: Students can delve deeper into specific topics through independent or collaborative research.

Assessments will comprise 50% externally set practical exams and 50% internally assessed work.

The WJEC Medical Science Diploma is designed as a stepping stone towards careers in healthcare, through progression onto HE courses or Healthcare Apprenticeships.

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.
