Overview

The Data Technician Apprenticeship equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to collect, process, analyse, and present data that supports informed decision-making across a wide range of industries, including finance, retail, education, healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, and the public sector. Apprentices develop an understanding of how data is used to improve business performance and learn to handle information securely, accurately, and ethically throughout its lifecycle.

Our expectation is that all Apprentices should already possess English and Mathematics to a GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent. However, we will consider applicants without these grades subject to an initial assessment with one of the Apprenticeship Team.

Throughout the apprenticeship, individuals gain practical experience sourcing, formatting, and preparing both structured and unstructured data for analysis. They learn to combine data from multiple sources, apply basic analytical techniques, and present insights in a clear and meaningful way that meets the needs of different audiences. By understanding data quality, governance, and the importance of accurate information, apprentices contribute to business improvement while supporting evidence-based decision-making. Working as part of a team, apprentices collabor ate with colleagues, managers, customers, and external stakeholders to support data-related activities across the organisation. They develop an awareness of legal, ethical, and organisational responsibilities when handling data, alongside an understanding of emerging digital technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT) and generative artificial intelligence (AI), and their impact on data management. Through the programme, apprentices build the technical and professional skills needed to manage data responsibly and contribute to organisational success in an increasingly data-driven environment. 24 months with a typical three month assessment period, no college release day required. Great progression to Data Analyst or AI and Automation Practitioner. Digital route.

Apprentices are taught via a mix of classroom delivery, work-based learning/assessment and vocational “on and off the job training”.

Knowledge test, portfolio based interview and project/improvement presentation.

After completing a Level 3 Apprenticeship, you can progress onto a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship, gain specialist responsibilities within your role, or move into supervisory and management positions. The advanced skills and industry experience you’ve developed will provide a strong foundation for continued career growth and professional development.

Opportunities may exist to gain professional accreditation in your chosen field post completion of the qualification. Your Assessor will support you with information on gaining professional accreditation. As we work with Apprentices that are already employed, if you attend our day release programmes you will mix with a diverse range of businesses with Apprentices in the same sector.

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.

Edward Smith, BTEC student

"I am delighted with my results and am really looking forward to studying Law at Oxford University. I really enjoyed my time at HSDC Alton and I really appreciate all the help and support from my fantastic teachers, without whom I wouldn't have got my place at Oxford."

Catherine Goldie, HSDC Alton A Level Student

I’m really happy and pleased with my grades. I really loved my time at the college, I have also made lots of friends, it’s a really nice place to be, I don’t want to leave.
