Overview

This course provides a good insight into the work of a beauty therapist.

For this course, dress code is very important. You’ll look at ways of presenting yourself professionally and working as part of a team. You will be taught in our realistic working salon, Salon74, practicing on each other until you have learned the practical skills necessary to work on clients.

Grade 2 or above in GCSE English, Maths and Science.

All students will be expected to comply with the beauty industry standards of dress code; this applies to both theory and practical lessons. Jewellery and facial piercings are not acceptable and must be removed before entering classes.

You will learn practical beauty skills including:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image
  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Salon reception duties
  • Working with others
  • Skin care treatments
  • Make-up application
  • Themed face painting
  • Nail art application
  • Manicure treatment
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • The art of photographic make-up

The theory will be covered in a classroom and you will have assignment work to complete. You will always need to be in full uniform and carry your kit to all practical classes. English and Mathematics skills will also form part of your course and will be included in each of your lessons. You may have the opportunity to partake in volunteering work within the community.

You will carry out a variety of practical treatments within a realistic working environment at the HSDC Beauty Salon, Salon74. You will also have assignment work to complete.

This course requires you to purchase a uniform and kit and we include trips
to enhance your learning and experience of industry. All of these costs will be
explained at interview and students in receipt of financial assistance will be
supported with these costs.

On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to move on to a Level 2 course in Beauty.

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.

Edward Smith, BTEC student

My experience at the college has been really good, it’s been really rewarding, all the lecturers were so lovely and supportive there’s no way I could have done it without them - the teaching has been outstanding.

Lucie Brooks, A Level student

“I owe the staff a lot and I wouldn't be where I am today without them.”

Tom Andrews, A Level Student
