Overview

On this course, you will explore an exciting range of styles including tap, ballet, jazz, street and contemporary (including Graham, Cunningham and the Limón technique). Dancers will also discover their creative voice through choreography and improvisation workshops.

We have exciting opportunities for dancers to participate in including:

  • Public dance shows in our AMP Theatre
  • Public recitals
  • Dance Live!
  • HSDC Dance Platform (competition judged by industry professionals)
  • Professional industry-based workshops
  • Theatre trips and educational visits abroad
  • Audition preparation classes
  • Digital portfolio sessions

HSDC is proud to be working in partnership with the University of Winchester to support our Performing Arts students with masterclasses, audition preparation, collaboration projects and progression opportunities.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language. Dance experience is essential and you will be expected to attend an audition as part of the interview process.

In year one you will complete units on technique, develop your performance skills and study contextual studies. In year two you will complete a self-directed project of your own choosing and perform your own choreography to an audience.

You will also study anatomy and nutrition and develop your technical skills through audition preparation.

You will be taught using a variety of methods such as lectures, demonstrations, presentations, group work, individual work, student-led projects and teacher-led projects.

Practical assessments will be carried out in a classroom environment or in the yearly shows. This is weighted as 90% practical course and 10% theory. There will be some evaluations at the end of each assessment.

Many of our students go on to professional dance schools such as Trinity Laban and Bird College, many others progress onto university to continue their studies.

The teaching and support was really great, the quality was really great, all the teachers really care about your education as well as your wellbeing, they take everything into consideration and they’re great.

Katie Whittingham, A Level student

Everyone at the College was really helpful, and there’s lots of facilities, meaning it’s very easy to get your work done on time, and get good grades. The teaching and support was excellent, they were always on top of it, and made sure you got work done on time and you were challenged. Everyone is friendly and its really diverse, meaning you can get involved in lots of different things.

Conor Ward, BTEC student

The teaching and support was absolutely brilliant, they couldn’t have done anything more or anything better, if I had any questions my lecturers would always stay behind to help me if I needed it and their emails were always open, it was second to none. This college is the best by far.

Amber Searle, BTEC student
