Overview

If you have a strong interest in performing and great enthusiasm for musical theatre, then this course is aimed at you. From day one you’ll take part in practical classes where youll develop and apply skills in acting, singing and dancing. To support this work you’ll investigate the background of musical theatre using research, presentation and written formats. As your practical skills develop you’ll set about analysing and evaluating your progress through logbooks and practise diaries. Projects may be either lecturer or student led, depending on your chosen material. Importantly, youll have regular opportunities to perform in musical theatre productions at the College. HSDC is proud to be working in partnership with the University of Winchester to support our Performing Arts students with masterclasses, audition preparation, collaboration projects and progression opportunities.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 including English Language. You will also be required to take part in an audition where we will assess your potential. You will sing a musical theatre song of your choice, perform a monologue which will be given to you to learn and participate in a dance workshop.

You will take part in practical classes where you will develop and apply skills in acting, singing and dancing. Supporting this work you will also investigate the background of musical theatre using research, presentation and written formats.

Many of your classes will be practical where you will be taught techniques in singing, acting and dancing. Some lessons will be theoretical where you will be required to undertake research projects. Projects can be either lecturer-led or student-led depending on the chosen material.

You will be continually assessed through observation in class, coursework and through performance.

You could go on to study in Higher Education either at university or at specialist colleges such as Arts Educational, Mountview, Guildford School of Acting, Performers College and Bird College. This qualification can also lead into teaching or the holiday industry as an entertainer.

My experience at the College was great, it’s very different to school, and I think it’s a good step to going to university. The support was amazing, I loved all of my teachers, they helped me through everything. The College is friendly and you will succeed.

Heidi Adamson Brattland, A Level student

I overcame a couple of barriers by working really hard to get the top grades. My experience was really good, with the course and the lecturers, the residentials and activities, together it was all really good. I had really great teaching support, I could always go to the lecturers and speak to them if I needed to.

David Stenning, Public Services student

The teaching and support was absolutely brilliant, they couldn’t have done anything more or anything better, if I had any questions my lecturers would always stay behind to help me if I needed it and their emails were always open, it was second to none. This college is the best by far.

Amber Searle, BTEC student
