Getting Ahead

Health & Social Care at Alton College

Are you studying the Level 3 Extended Certificate in Health & Social Care at Alton in September? If so, you’re in the right place!

Health and Social Care practitioners need to develop a knowledge base for working with people at every stage of their lives, and they need to know how their own experiences relate to health and wellbeing. Although it is generally accepted that there may be deterioration in health with age following adulthood, medical intervention means people are living longer and have better life prospects. One of the first units you will study, Human Lifespan Development (which is externally examined), looks at life from 0 to end of life.

Please complete the below tasks, print and hand in on your first day.

Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals with different needs. Consider this for the three people identified below:

  1. A 19-year-old female with learning disabilities and epilepsy
  2. A 79-year-old female with Alzheimer’s
  3. A 26-year-old man who has recently been diagnosed with HIV

Explain the skills and personal attributes (qualities) necessary for a range of people (including professionals) who care and support individuals with different needs – you may wish to reflect back on Activity 1.

‘Explain’ means to give an account of the purposes or reasons: ‘What, how, why…this is important because’.

Note: Identify the sources of information you have used i.e, books, journals, reliable and relevant internet sites.

Create a timeline that shows your development from birth to 10 years old; feel free to include scanned pictures in what you do. Include milestones in your development such as:

  • Sitting up
  • Crawling
  • Walking
  • First words
  • Eating solid food
  • Running
  • Talking fluently
  • Dancing
  • Kicking a ball
  • Starting school

Watch ‘Child of Our Time Turning 20’ (also listed in resources on this page).

Having watched the documentary, write a 300-word summary describing, explaining and evaluating how the experiences identified have impacted the teenagers’ development (Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social).
