Getting Ahead

Digital Games Design & Development UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma at Alton Campus

Video gaming has increased massively in popularity and this course will give you hands-on experience in developing and creating games for this ever-growing industry. On this course, you will cover how to come up with ideas, research, plan and then produce materials in preparation for careers and progression into the exciting world of video games production. Our new Gaming & Creative Digital Studios opened in September 2021 – we can’t wait to welcome you, to share your passion not just for playing games, but for how they are made and brought to audiences for consumption.

Research into the history of video gaming and create a timeline of some of the key events that have shaped modern gaming. Start in the 1950s and bring us right up into 2022.

Things to include in your timeline are:

  • Technological Advancements – e.g. When was the first video game invented and by whom? When were arcade machines most popular? What was the first game to use the internet? When was V.R. first introduced?
  • Famous Examples of Games – When were these released? What impact did they have on the gaming industry? How much money did they make?
  • Famous Figures – When were they born? What successful games did they make/oversee?

Use text and images to display your findings. Be as creative as you can with displaying this information!

Make a collage of your gaming habits to show us what types of games you like to play and write some annotations on why you like them.

Some ideas on what to include:

  • Single Player Games – What solo experiences have you enjoyed? Do you enjoy more story driven games?
  • Multiplayer – Do you like playing online games? (e.g. battle royales) Do you like co-op games with your friends?
  • Mobile Gaming – Have you played many games on your phone? e.g. Fortnite, PUBG, Among Us, etc.
  • Genres – Are there any particular types of games you like to play in terms of genre? e.g. horror, science fiction, fantasy, war, etc.

My experience at the College was great, it’s very different to school, and I think it’s a good step to going to university. The support was amazing, I loved all of my teachers, they helped me through everything. The College is friendly and you will succeed.

Heidi Adamson Brattland, A Level student

My experience at the college was enjoyable and productive, with thoroughly helpful people surrounding you, an excellent experience. I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was, with the work shop time and experience I had, it was a great two years preparing me for the next stage.

Edward Smith, BTEC student

College is definitely worth all the effort you put in, you get to meet lots of different people and it’s amazing.
