Getting Ahead

Further Mathematics A Level at Havant Campus

Further Mathematics is a separate A Level to Mathematics and you will have to take Mathematics A Level alongside. You should refer to the Getting Ahead work that has been prepared for A Level Mathematics before you follow the activities on this page.

We have included activities and links to topics that are covered in Further Mathematics but not in Mathematics. This is not an exhaustive list but enough to give you a hint of the vast subject that mathematics becomes as you look deeper into it.

You should seriously consider taking Further Mathematics if you intend to study Mathematics at degree level. It is also a great A Level to do if you are very good at mathematics and you really enjoy it!

In Further Mathematics A Level we use matrices to do simple 3D transformations. We also use them to solve simultaneous equations. Matrices are used in many technical subjects including Economics and Computer Graphics and you will need to understand their use if you go on to study subjects such as Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry at university.

Part of Further Maths Statistics involves an area of Mathematics which have various names – “Permutations and Combinations”, “Arrangement and Selections” to name just two. You may even see the word “Combinatorics” used but this word has a much wider meaning in Mathematics further on at university. In any case, what we are concerned with here can be described as Principles of Counting. Because we are concerned with the number of physical objects here we typically are concerned with positive integers – positive whole numbers. Please read and follow this live document Permutations and Combination to get a glimpse of this important topic.

I overcame a couple of barriers by working really hard to get the top grades. My experience was really good, with the course and the lecturers, the residentials and activities, together it was all really good. I had really great teaching support, I could always go to the lecturers and speak to them if I needed to.

David Stenning, Public Services student

My courses were all especially interesting, I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. All of my lecturers were extremely knowledgeable and I have learnt a lot from them.

Lottie Warren, A Level student

I’m really happy and pleased with my grades. I really loved my time at the college, I have also made lots of friends, it’s a really nice place to be, I don’t want to leave.
