Volunteers for Havant & South Downs College were thanked by the principal at a tea event on Wednesday, 18 April.

A number of people give their time selflessly for HSDC, from helping out in the classroom or to working in the Leigh Park Learning Centre.

These people were gathered on Wednesday at the South Downs Campus and shown appreciation for their hard work and generosity towards the College.

Irene Hagen is a classroom assistant for Mathematics. She said: “I have been volunteering on and off for the College for two years now.

“I like to do it because I enjoy giving something back to society. I like the fact I am benefiting the College whilst keeping my brain active!

“Life is too short not to volunteer! I love it and it is nice to be appreciated for it.”

Bob Newberry has volunteered for HSDC for an impressive 17 years.

He said: “I am a volunteer in the Chemistry department as a classroom assistant.

“I started in 2001 and have a background in pharmaceuticals so I have a good knowledge of the subject.

“I enjoy doing something useful and taking the pressure off the lecturers.”

Principal Mike Gaston spoke to the volunteers, thanking them for their dedication to Havant & South Downs College.

He added: “It is only right that we have these events to say thank you for all your hard work. The support you offer us really does speak for itself.”
