A former student who has gone on to become a successful illustrator and designer visited Havant & South Downs College (HSDC) on 30 November to share his knowledge and journey with current students.
Joe Munro, who studied A Levels in Fine Art, Graphic Design, History and Maths in 2010, held a talk and workshops for creative arts students.
After his time at the South Downs Campus, Joe went on to complete a degree in Illustration at the University of the West of England.
Joe said: “During my A Levels I discovered that rather than looking at the architecture of a building, I was interested in showing the story behind the building. I felt that illustration would allow me to do more of this type of art.”
Joe continued to say that when he left school, he didn’t really have a plan. However, he had inspiring art teachers and a very creative family who were supportive of his creative direction.
He continued: “Whilst researching what to do with my future I started to discover that many entrepreneurs and top business leaders had creative backgrounds, they had studied Fine Art or Illustration, and this gave them an edge with creative thinking and ideas.
“That’s when I decided to study creative A Levels.”
Joe added that he had an amazing time at the former South Downs College and enjoyed the social side of making friends with like-minded people.
“I am delighted to be invited back into HSDC to talk about my work and journey,” Joe said. “I am very passionate about giving back and sharing my specialism.”
Joe is now a freelance illustrator, working with clients in London, and teaches at a university.
Fine Art students spoke highly of Joe Munro’s visit, saying:
-
“It has been really useful, it has helped me to loosen up the way I draw”
-
“Joe was really engaging to listen to”
