Skills for Life and Adult Learning staff and students came together, virtually that is, on the evening of Monday 22 June to celebrate at their Awards Evening 2020. Part of the celebration was to announce that this provision has been graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted after its inspection in March 2020.

Skills for Life has both a part time and a full time provision and offers classes at several different locations to over 1,400 learners in English, Maths and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Adult Learning, at our Havant Campus, provides English and Maths classes to over 150 learners.

This annual event, which features a recognition speech, an award and a prize given to each winner, is normally held in person but adaptation was the key in this pandemic year and everyone joined via a Zoom meeting link.

Some of the winners included Kelly Fairweather (Excellent Attendance – English 19+); Eleni Papageorgiou (Exceptional Progress – Maths 16-18); Nikki Allison and Penny Allen (Extraordinary Contribution to the Community – QA workers); and HSDC volunteer Steve Prankard (Exceptional Support to Help Learners Achieve). Steve said: “I thought it was a great evening and for me, inspiring to hear the praises of the students being sung by the staff.”

Sam Woodland, Learning Manager for Skills for Life, is delighted at the calibre of learners:

“We are truly blessed that our learners have been so dedicated with their studies during this pandemic. Some had only been in class for two weeks before lockdown happened. This award ceremony recognizes those students who go the extra mile to achieve their goals and improve their prospects. They make our classes a pleasure to teach!”

Congratulations to the Skills for Life and Adult Learning students who have achieved so much. We wish them well with their future studies and opportunities.

Recruitment is now underway for classes starting in September. To find out more and book an enrolment session, ring 023 9387 9999 or email admissions@hsdc.ac.uk.
