Alton College is dedicated to providing its students with extracurricular activities to enrich their learning, particularly in the local community. 10 students on the Extended Diploma in Sport course recently volunteered to organise a football tournament at a local primary school, exemplifying Alton’s commitment to helping its students beyond the classroom.
The Butts Primary School hosted the tournament for local schools in the area to attend, providing hours of fun football for all the pupils involved. Each Alton student was given a different school to look after during the day, as well as assisting with the refereeing of the games.
Alongside their refereeing duties, the Alton students were also coaches and managers of their respective schools, and thoroughly enjoyed their time at the tournament. Each student involved demonstrated Alton College’s fantastic commitment to its community, and it was truly inspiring to see them get involved in the tournament with such passion.
Dean Gillatt, a lecturer in Alton’s Sports Department, was immensely proud of the students, saying:
“The Sports students were fantastic in organising and leading pupils from a mixture of local schools. They showed a great attitude and gave up their free time to put the skills they have to good use. The Key stage 1 children really enjoyed playing in the tournament and developing their footballing skills.”
Alton’s Sports Department is one of the many standout faculties at the College, and is planning to continue these enriching activities long into the future. Speaking about the department’s plans for future community work, Dean said:
“We are hoping to now add it as an annual event. The Sports students will get plenty more chances to lead, coach and officiate in future events planned.”
This is an extremely exciting prospect for both Alton and the wider community, as it means that Sports students will be able to benefit from real-world sports management experience whilst also helping local schools enrich the learning of their pupils.
