Alton Alumnus Returns to Campus for Inspiring Apprenticeship Talk

April 28, 2026

Alton College recently welcomed back former student Charlie Thorne, now a Degree Apprentice Engineer with BAE Systems, to inspire current learners by sharing first-hand insight into the breadth of engineering opportunities available with one of the UK’s leading aerospace and defence companies.

Charlie, who studied Engineering at Alton College before leaving in 2023, was joined by his colleague James Burton for an engaging talk with current first and second-year engineers at Alton. This session explored real-world projects, career progression routes and the vital role that apprentices can play in the wider economy.

During the talk, Charlie reflected on his time at Alton College, and his decision to pursue a degree apprenticeship rather than the traditional university route, highlighting the immediate exposure to industry and professional development that it offers:

“I wanted to get straight into work, a degree apprenticeship is perfect for that. Your mentors genuinely want you to learn, providing greater career opportunities and personal development.”

The Engineering students were given an overview of the wide range of apprenticeships offered by BAE Systems, and obtained valuable insight into the technical and professional skills that they need to succeed here.

A particular highlight of the session was the discussion around BAE Systems’ submarine programmes, which both speakers described as one of the company’s most exciting and technically challenging engineering projects.

Charlie’s progression from Alton student to degree apprentice with BAE underscores the strength of technical education at the College. Alton remains committed to working closely with both employers and alumni to provide meaningful careers education and guidance, ensuring students remain well-informed about the full range of post-College pathways, including apprenticeships and university.
