Overview

If you love Mathematics, doing this course means you can double the amount of Mathematics on your timetable!

As well as the topics described in A Level Mathematics, you’ll discover what the square root of -1 is and how matrices are used in making computer-animated films. You’ll also discover why motorway corners are banked and how to decide whether a new drug has improved life expectancy for cancer patients.

You’ll be solving differential equations to model simple harmonic motion and the population of foxes and rabbits. And you’ll prove the formula for the volume of a sphere.

If you are an able mathematician and interested in maths-related careers and courses such as Engineering, Physics, Economics or Computing, then this course is for you.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language. You must also have a grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics. This course must be studied alongside A Level Mathematics.

This is a two-year course. In Year 1 you will cover the material for A Level Mathematics and in Year 2 you will cover the work for A Level Further Mathematics.

The Further Mathematics course consists of Pure Mathematics (50%) and then two options (25% each), chosen from Further Pure, Further Mechanics, Decision Maths and Further Statistics. The options taught will vary from year to year.

Lesson activities are wide-ranging, from classroom discussions on how best to mathematically model a situation, to practising problem-solving questions in pairs. Graphic calculators and online apps will be used to introduce and explore concepts.

You will also participate in the National Senior Maths Challenge and can help out at Maths competitions for feeder schools we organise every year. Our best students will be part of the Senior Team Maths Challenge, which we hope to win again. Students can also get support for STEP, MAT & TMUA university entrance exams needed for Cambridge, Oxford & Durham, along with competitions such as the Maths Olympiad for Girls.

100% exams; consisting of four papers, each 1.5 hours long.
