Overview

Media Studies explores how the media impacts us as individuals and as a society. You’ll learn how media industries operate and explore issues such as representation, audience and genre.

You will learn about a wide range of media forms including television, magazines, video games and online media. The emphasis of this course will be on developing your analytical skills through discussion and essay writing. There is a practical element to the course and you will have the opportunity to create your own music video, TV sequence or advertising campaign.

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4.

You will study:– A wide range of media including advertising, music videos, film marketing,video games, radio and newspapers.– Television in the global age, mainstream and alternative magazines, and media in the online age.You will explore how different media industries operate, and how fans and consumers interact with media ‘texts’.– A variety of theories which can be applied to concepts such as genre, narrative and audience.– Coursework: a practical production in response to a choice of briefs (e.g. creating a TV sequence, magazine or music video).

Lessons involve discussion, viewing, reading and note-making. You will earn to analyse media texts through a combination of teacher-led presentations, individual research, essay-writing and group work.

For the coursework production you will have the opportunity to develop your creative and technical skills such as camera work and editing.

 30% coursework, 70% exams (two exam papers).
