The Graphics A Level provides the opportunity for students to develop your creative potential as a graphic designer or graphic illustrator through a wide area of study.
Be it advertising, campaigns or branding, graphic communication is integral to everyday life. Focusing on the use of text and image to communicate ideas, you’ll produce practical explorations alongside critical analysis in areas including illustration, typography, advertising, packaging design and design for print.
5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and Mathematics. You should have studied an art or design based GCSE and achieved a minimum of grade 4 in the related subject. It may be possible to gain entry to this course without a GCSE in an art or design related subject by submitting a portfolio showcasing your practical work at interview.
Courework portfolio
This course requires open minded, self-motivated students to produce independent work on subjects varying from handmade typography and illustration workshops to vector graphic designs with industry based techniques. You will explore digital programmes such as Adobe Illustrator and complete a number of exciting live graphic projects.
You will be supported by lecturers with previous graphic design or illustration industry experience and will be able to make full use of the excellent facilities and equipment available to you. You will be well informed of both current and historically significant artists/designers through a range of presentations and independent research.
To consolidate your class based research, you will be required to spend approximately five hours per week to self directed study developing your project work. You will finish the course with a formal qualification and a varied portfolio of work suitable for both employment and academic interviews. This course is assessed through a coursework portfolio and an externally set assignment.
Many students wishing to pursue art & design further progress onto Higher Education or Apprenticeships within creative sectors.
You will be able to develop a portfolio fit for direct entry to Degree, HND or pre-degree Foundation courses. This course has prepared past students for pathways including graphic design, illustration, typography, digital media, computer animation, computer games design, advertising, fine art and architecture.
