Overview

This course combines academic study with practical experience and is an ideal choice if you are hoping to pursue a career in health, early years education or social work.The research, evaluation and problem- solving skills you will develop will be valuable preparation for Higher Education courses or furthering your knowledge for a profession related to the course. In Year 1, you will cover physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan plus the factors affecting development and the effects of ageing. You will also study the principles and practicalities that underpin meeting an individual’s care and support needs, which is the foundation for all the care disciplines.In Year 2, you will explore what it is like to work in the health & social care sectors, including the roles and responsibilities of workers and organisations. Year 2 will be supporting individuals with additional needs from a sociological or psychological perspective. There will be talks on the course from guest speakers in health, social care and early years settings, as well as various trips and visits.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language, Mathematics and Science.

The College offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, studios, workshops, presentations and group discussions. You will have access to the Learning Hub and other online and digital resources through the student portal. We also have visits from guest speakers from individuals in the profession and various trips to see the course in action.

Each year you will be assessed by an exam in the first unit and coursework in the second unit.

This course is designed to provide progression to Higher Education and further training for employment in a health science profession, early years care and education and social care. Our previous students have gone on to a variety of careers including social policy, health studies, teaching and youth and community studies.

We have excellent links with local health, early years education and social care providers, who provide an interactive experience for our students in the form of focus groups, presentations and visits.
